Site: Zona Franca, Barcelona.
Gross floor area: 1.435sqm
Energy qualification: A (nZEB)
The competition is presented for the expansion of one of the local police building in Barcelona and our motto and main purpose for this is ‘ vers un nZEB ‘ (nearly Zero Energy Building). What we are proposing as a premise from the beginning, is a building which complies with the 2010/31/EU Directive, mandatory from 2018 for public buildings, and related to the energy performance of buildings. In addition, we also consider other important criteria such as efficiency in water use, natural lighting, the origin of the materials and the resources used for its manufacture, the management of construction wastes and the indoor environmental quality for building users.
The proposal seeks a formal dialogue with the old building generating a common atrium, which serves as the main access, lobby and reception area, and also function as a volume of natural, passive and thermal regulation .
Furthermore, the new building is proposed with criteria of formal clarity and functional prioritization, without underestimating its aesthetic quality. This building is constructed using a prefabricated wood system and low environmental impact.
The result achieved for heating energy consumption is 23,6 Kwh/sqm/year. Compared to a regulatory building, the consumption reduction is about a 94 %. The energy consumption for cooling is about 123 Kwh/sqm/year, which implies a reduction of approximately 98%.
